Sheep and Wool

While we impatiently await the arrival of our remainder of our 8th lamb crop we are reviewing what we want to keep as lambs arrive.  We have rams ready for breeding for sale.  Keep checking in as we will update you on what is happening once the lambs are all born and we have sorted through them.

For the past few years we have been discussing adding another breed to the farm.  We talked to breeders from many farms when we were out and about.

Tunis Sheep are dual purpose.  So, yes, we have actually ate one of the sheep we raised.  We did this for several reasons.  First to see how the meat tasted since it was a ram and we had been told that Tunis meet tasted different from other sheep meat.  We are very happily enjoying the products.  As a side note, we felt this animal would not be an asset to anyone's breeding program so the end result was to butcher the animal.
We do shear our sheep once or twice a year.  Depending upon what you wish to do with the wool impacts if we have a fleece for your needs.  Tunis fleeces are usually used for yarn.  Our fleeces are quite different from each other so some may appeal to your needs while others may not.
Breeding Program
Stu/Jet 14006
He has been part of our breeding program since the beginning.  Stu stood in the champion ring many times during his show career.  We are anticipating another crop of lambs sired by him.  Plus his first two ewes born on our farm are bred by Sven arrived this spring.
Sven /Jet 1541
He has done very well in the show rings and had two ewes deliver large lambs this spring.
Craft 15-35 "Pluto"
Pluto wrapped up his show career with Champion Tunis Ram at the '18 PA Farm Show.  We have had several ewes lamb with good looking lambs this spring.
Lambing Season
At Spring House Run Farm we lamb in winter and spring.
We will keep some lambs for the show string and to expand the flock.
We are waiting until lambing season is over before deciding on what will be sold.  We do have a waiting list of people interested in our lambs.
